Prambanan

Between Yogyakarta and Solo there is a wonderful peaceful restored ruin from the 10th century CE, Prambanan. There were two major kingdoms in central Java in the 10th century, Borobudur to the west of Yogyakarta and Prambanan to the east of Yogyakarta.

This is Prambanan; you have seen Borobudur on a previous blog. Prambanan was Hindu, Borobudur was Buddhist. The two were combined into one religious group and kingdom with a marriage. Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma are all featured in different temples here at Prambanan, but Shiva the destroyer is the main player, along with his wife/consort Druga.

This Ellen and our guide Sandy on the steps to the Shiva temple that has just been re-opened after the 2006 earthquake. That is the reason for the hard hats.

Here is part of our group with our local guide.
